Rob de Lange (1958) graduated from the d’Witte Lelie college in Amsterdam, training as a teacher of drawing and handicrafts. But teaching never became his path.

From 1987 he retrained as an illustrator. Through that work he sharpened his eye and his skills in the most varied of techniques.

After the birth of his son (1997) he made his first painting, a self-portrait in oil. That was when he knew he wanted to go on as a painter. In a short time he developed into a realist artist with excellent craftsmanship and a strong feeling for colour and the fall of light. His main sources of inspiration are people and the paint itself. That material, and his feeling for intensity, produce a form of painting that excels in expressive power.

I look at life through a frame; I want to hold on to what moves me.

De Lange prefers to paint in acrylic. He chooses his subjects from ordinary life: people, everyday scenes, a demolished building, now and then a still life. In recent years an urge has arisen to give free rein to the imagination within his realism — a development that again yields exciting and intriguing work.

De Lange has his studio in the Zaan region, the Netherlands. He can be approached for portrait commissions.
