Ruth Fernandes graduated from the art academy in Israel and later studied printmaking, photography and sculpture at schools in Great Britain and the United States of America. Ruth currently lives and makes her art in Málaga, in the south of Spain. She has previously lived in the United States, Israel, Mexico and Bulgaria.

Ruth’s art consists of mixed media pieces. She sews, embroiders and sculpts fabrics. She makes painted collages from discarded garments, cardboard, paper, plastic and other interesting media.

Her deep bond with fabrics and textiles goes back to early childhood and to her relationship with her mother, who as the kibbutz shopkeeper was responsible for distributing clothing to the community. It was there that she explored the different textures and endless colours inherent in fabrics and clothing. When Ruth moved to Mexico, she discovered the way place influences these patterns, the vividness of the colours and the texture. More recently she began combining fabric and collage with paint, while also exploring the use of cardboard and plastic. At every new step Ruth has continued to explore new media and techniques, inspired by her surroundings.
